OBITUARIES

Jim Woodyard
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 18, 1936, James (Jim) lived a life marked by
dedication to his family, quiet strength, and enduring love for those closest to him. He
was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, EmmaJean Woodyard, with whom he
shared 66 years of marriage, companionship, and cherished memories.
Jim was a physicist, educator, researcher, and longtime professor in the Department of
Electrical and Computer Engineering at Wayne State University.
A veteran of the United States Air Force, he overcame an unconventional path to higher
education, leaving high school before later earning his bachelor’s degree from
Duquesne University and his master’s and PhD in physics from the University of
Delaware. He also completed a post-doctoral fellowship at a federal laboratory before
beginning a distinguished career in academia.
During more than four decades at Wayne State University, Dr. Woodyard taught
engineering courses to traditional and non-traditional students, including classes offered
through the community programs and correctional education. His research, supported
by NASA and industry grants, contributed to advances in engineering and applied
physics.
He was elected multiple times to university faculty senate and served on numerous
faculty and administrative committees where he advocated for student success,
academic quality, and improved university governance. His service earned him the
Wayne State University Presidential Service Award and the Outstanding Faculty of the
Year Award.
Officially in retirement, Jim continued to work tirelessly for Southeastern Michigan
Chapter 8, the EMC Society, and served as its treasurer up until his last year.
Those who knew Jim will remember his wisdom, his unwavering commitment to any
project he was involved with, along with his love of biking and sailing on Lake Huron.
His presence brought comfort and stability to family and friends alike, and his legacy will
live on through the many lives he touched.

Though he will be deeply missed, his many friends and his family find comfort in the
countless memories they share and the lasting impact he made.
